The story to accompany the following photos has been written by Barb Elliot of our Cottonmill Quilt Guild. Thanks to Barb and to Jennifer Speedy for the interesting and important piece of history...an honour Barb. Your Mom would definitely been pleased that you carried on with this project.
---------------------
Queen Elizabeth’s father, the King George VI, gave a speech in December 1939
and again in May 1940 – WW ll .
Chatelaine magazine sold embroidery projects of
excerpts from these speeches.
My Mother -Thelma Jewett Kolding - bought these
projects in the early 1940’s. She embroidered one of the projects and left it
folded in the original envelope.
Mom died in 2006 and I found these
needleworks in her “stash” of fabric.
Who better to appreciate these than Queen Elizabeth?
So I asked Jennifer Speedy to embroider the second one and she did just that this past July. (Jennifer spent part of her
childhood in England. Her Mother was a British War Bride). This one was especially important because it
was a poem (titled GOD KNOWS) that The Queen read in the late 1930’s. She showed
it to her Father who then put it in his speech. (I read this in Wikipedia on
the computer.)
I sent these two linen
embroideries (each 8 ½ inches x 11inches) to The Queen last month and, as
usual, anyone who sends her a gift receives a “thank-you” letter. I got my
letter on Sept 2. Mom would have loved
the idea of having something of hers given to The Queen.
