Christmas Stockings for the Terraces

Math.
How many stockings can you get from  5.5 Meters of
double wide silk like fabric.
Answer: 70
It all started with a phone call just over a week ago.  The Terraces Residence is hosting a Christmas Party and they need Christmas Stockings to stuff for the residents.     So a call to action was received by our guild, and what a delight to see so many of our guild members come out to help on such short notice.   The Terraces provided the space and the fabric.  We had no idea how long it would take us to make 69 stockings, but we're game.

Well, we started out by cutting the fabric into reasonable size chunks and laying out the pattern.  We traced and cut the patterns out.  A total of 280 sock  pieces were cut.  Then came the sewing of the tops of each side of the sock followed by pinning then surging around the foot.   Ironing is a big part of this project and we had two irons on the go the whole time.

Within three hours, the sewing was done and I was so impressed with everyone's focus to get the job done.  What a feel good project.

Many thanks to everyone who participated.    Here are a few pictures from today.

We had  two sewing machines and one serger.
Many people cut..
then many people pinned to feed the sewers and serger.

Anne put one of the residents, Jenny, to work clipping threads.

Turns out that Anne is a good listener.

Oops, this is what can happen when we're having too much fun.
Get the seam ripper out, girls...

Work, Work... it's 11:20 am.

Oh my stars.  It's noon.  Sewing is all done.
We only have the stars left to iron on.

That's a lot of Stockings..

It's almost 12:30 and we're done.  I'm so impressed, are you?

Let's eat our lunch before we clean up and head out.

  2. It was fun for those of us who were lucky enough to be able to go, and the seniors were somewhat enthralled too!
I had a lovely time with a Mrs Giberson who helped cut out socks with me/us too, and was a sewer in her early days. She shared stories of her interesting life and her large family on their farm. She enjoyed being able to help and was delightful.

A big thank you for setting the project up GAIL!!

  3. It was a fun morning. I think it brought back a lot of memories for the residents, Surprising how many of them were sewers/quilters in their younger days They were in awe of our new fandangled machines. We shared some little tidbits and heard some great stories, We must do it again sometime.
